ABSTRACT

The articulation between agroindustry and rural tourism represents a strategic alternative to strengthen the environmental and economic resilience of Ecuadorian rural communities. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between both sectors in territories of the Sierra (Azuay, Chimborazo, and Cotopaxi) and the Amazon (Napo and Pastaza), assessing their impact on local sustainability and territorial development. The research followed a mixed-method approach with a non-experimental, descriptive–explanatory design. Structured surveys were applied to 287 participants, including agroindustrial producers, tourism actors, and community leaders; semi-structured interviews and direct observation were also conducted. Quantitative data were processed using statistical analysis (SPSS v.27), while qualitative data were examined through thematic content analysis with NVivo 12, focusing on sustainability, innovation, and resilience. Results showed that productive units integrating tourism and agroindustry achieved 65.4% higher income compared to those dedicated exclusively to agroindustry, while promoting inclusive employment, particularly for women and youth. These communities also exhibited higher adoption rates of sustainable practices such as waste management, wastewater treatment, and the use of renewable energy sources. Moreover, findings revealed the strengthening of social capital through cooperation networks and cultural revitalization. However, structural barriers persist, including limited access to financing, technical training, and institutional support. In conclusion, the integration of agroindustry and rural tourism fosters sustainability and territorial resilience when grounded in innovation, equity, and community participation. Public policies should promote rural digitalization, access to clean technologies, and the protection of cultural heritage.
